About Coach Shannon
Shannon Ward (formerly McCarthy) is a seasoned soccer professional and dedicated trainer with Michigan Soccer Training, bringing world-class playing experience and a passion for player development to every session. As a standout defender and three-year co-captain for the University of Miami Hurricanes, Shannon anchored one of the most dynamic defenses in school history — leading the team in minutes played, helping set program records for fewest goals allowed and lowest goals-against average, and contributing key offensive plays from the back line. After college, Shannon took her talents abroad, competing professionally in Japan and Sweden before joining BIIK Kazygurt — one of Kazakhstan’s premier women’s clubs competing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, where she showcased her ability to perform on a global stage, reaching the round of 16 against Bayern Munich two years in a row.
Her professional journey included a remarkable comeback from a serious knee injury (ACL/MCL), returning to high-level play with Detroit City FC in the USL W League, where she was honored by her coach as player of the year and captured the La Rouge Legacy Most Valuable Player Award upon return in 2022. Ward then competed with AFC Flint in the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Macomb Union FC signed the experienced defender to anchor its backline in the club’s first ever USL W League appearance in 2025.
Ward showcased extreme versatility when Detroit City FC signed her to compete in the club’s first ever professional Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) team in 2024. She helped City finish third at the National Championship. After just one arena soccer season, Ward was invited to the Minifootball National Team training camp in preparation for the 2024 Minifootball World Cup. She was one of 13 field players to make the World Cup roster and won Gold in Croatia, defeating Mexico in the Final. With added experience returning to Detroit for the 2025 MASL season, City reached the National Championship game.
Shannon’s leadership extends beyond the pitch. She has coached and directed youth programs — including roles with The Michigan Hawks and Nationals Capital Area — where she applies her elite competitive background to elevate players’ technical understanding, tactical awareness, and confidence. Whether guiding field sessions or mentoring young athletes through adversity, leadership and success, Shannon brings a relentless work ethic, global perspective, and championship mindset to MST.
